Song

I

I took from a far wide field

of high mountain ferns,

blueberry bush and roses

wide and open to the drifting fog

a red lily

so delicate

so elegant

that my enchantment smiled

between the sorrel grasses

and the sun.

II

I brought the red lily

wrapped in a lettuce leaf

to you.

It faded between the distance of our two houses.

My heart failed too.

And all the vermilion happiness

of this old love

wept.

III

I brought you a gift of a lily

I brought you a gift of a red star.

You smiled, but your hands stayed behind you.

You smiled, but you stayed where you are.

The red lily fades in the grasses

Dreaming of high meadows and wind;

And I, without lily or meadow,

Turn away.
